About Community Church of God

The story of our earliest beginnings dates back to 1925, when Sis. Minnie Walker started a new group, in her home, called the Church of God with the assistance of Elder John Richards and Dr. Raymond Jackson. The church increased and the first church building on Monroe Street was constructed and dedicated by Elder E. F. Oden on August 9, 1931.

The work of the early church was sustained under the following pastors:

Dolly Martin 1925-1933 Jack Ricks 1951-1956
John Clark 1934-1936 David Marshall 1959-1961
John Evans 1936-1940 Roosevelt Williams 1962-1968
Charles White 1940-1945 Fred L. Davis 1968-2006
Jessie Caldwell 1946-1949 Theron W. Kersey 2006-Present
Bessie Collins (interim) 1950-1950

A New Era

1968 was the beginning of a new era for the small congregation on Monroe Street because Pastor Davis, a visionary, had a dream to establish a church and school that serves not only its membership, but also the entire community. The vision was contagious, and it infected the entire congregation. Land was purchased on Jefferson Street and in 1970 the church witnessed the fulfillment of its dream of a new building seating 250 worshippers. True to his dream of serving the entire community, the church was renamed Community Church of God.

Pastor Davis believed, trusted, and stood on the Word of God, "I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me" Phil 4:13. He preached and taught the congregation to do the same. As a result, in 1980, new land was purchased and a 1,000-seat sanctuary was built adjacent to the old church. In 1990, the two buildings were connected. In 1998, construction began on a multi-purpose building. That building now houses the fulfillment of yet another dream of Pastor Davis, "WSC Academy."

After thirty-nine years of service and witnessing the fulfillment of his dreams, Pastor Davis passed the mantle on to Associate Pastor, Theron W. Kersey. In his position as Pastor of Community Church, Pastor Kersey is building on the foundation set by Pastor Davis and it is his earnest desire to keep the vision alive.
